$ iPOD vs. Pocket PC (9/16/2005)

I really don't understand why iPods are so popular...

then again, maybe I do; but not for the same reasons or thinking as most of the people who have one. It's all about style and being apart of "the crowd"... why do I say this? Quite simply for the fact that I think iPod's are overrated and most importantly, overpriced for what limited functionality they provide.

For a touch under $500... I decided that I would opt out for something with more functionality and could pretty much do what an iPod can plus more. and I have to say... for the extra $100, it was well worth it!

I really like my Pocket PC (Dell Axim). Not only does it have the ability to play music (in the venerable mp3, and wmv formats), but I can watch movies on it, surf the web, E-mail, calendar my events, take notes, record conversations and etc... and, I even found a little app called Ppod... which is an iPod emulator, so I can make my axim's screen look like the interface of an iPod... EAT THAT IPOD FAN FREAKS! But the truth is, I haven't even scratched the surface with this device. I mean, there are hundreds of add-ons, such as the blue tooth GPS device and the ability to link to a blue tooth mobile phone so I can surf the web using GPRS or CDMA...

The iPod on the other hand, has the ability to play music (and store it on it's massive 60GB Hard drive), store pictures, and some limited functionality as far as play video is concerned. I must admit that the flare of Mr. Jobs really shows off in the design and style of the iPods (just like all Apple products, they are more art, than device). But all that for $400? I don't know about everyone else, but for a technophile like me... that seems a touch too expensive.

So take it for what you will... iPod or Pocket PC... I have already chosen, and I like my choice.

$ Tip of the month (9/12/2005)

Month, week, year... meh; I'll do it evenever I feel like...

Anyways.

For the ppl who don't know and care if their machine gets infected by a virus/spyware...

There are some cool online utilities you can use:

http://housecall.trendmicro.com

It's a free online scanning utility which comes in handy if you ever need to do a scan, in case you think your scanner might not be doin it's job.

As for utilites that eliminate spyware, here are my top five rankings:

1.) Microsoft Anti-spyware (Formerly Giant Anti-spyware)

2.) Hi-jack this! (for experts who know what they're doing

3.) Webroot Spy Sweeper

4.) Ad-aware

5.) Spybot Search and Destroy

With these tools, you can eliminate almost 96% of the spyware on a machine. For the rest of the 4%, you'll need an expert... perhaps someone like me...hehehe

$ Microshaft can ki$$ my a$$ (9/12/2005)

Seriously,

Who does Microsoft think they are kidding?

I mean they go out in public and say they are trying to woo the OSDL to find out if they are willing to work mutually to find a way to measure the Return on investment comparing Windows against Linux. Microsoft is saying they are in no way Linux-bashing... that they are only interrested in finding out the true value of both technologies.

Give me a break!... Everyone knows what Windows is... it's a big pile of shit! If there were any justice in the world, Steve Jobs would see Apple stock going through the roof from people buying one of the best Operating Systems on the retail market. Theo de Raadt and his team at OpenBSD labs would finally get some recognition for building a secure OS, and Linux would be given the award for best adapted OS to fit the most hardware platforms in history. And in all fairness... if the people at Xerox (mainly the management, and not the engineers) had vision to see their product through, it would be Xerox (not Microsoft) that is winning the desktop OS wars.

What Windows has is great marketing and vision... that's it... the technology is nothing new and is in fact bits and pieces from other places (including Apple and Xerox). Even Gates said it to Jobs when Jobs was saying that his product was better than Windows (back when windows was 3.0 and just a skin ontop of DOS).

So what if Linux is all hype and marketing.... Microsoft should rememeber that at one point in time, that's all they were when they started.

I myself am a UNIX junkie, but I have a small place in my heart for Linux... not just because of hype... but the people driving the hype.

Human knowledge should be free for the masses... and Linux represents the people.... while Microsoft represents the mass business money making machine (not that there is anything wrong with that).

$ My New tech blog... (9/12/2005)

seeing as how I have an endless knowledge of computers; that isn't to say I know everything... only that I know a lot; I decided I should put all my tech thoughts into this blog. I might cross-post between my personal blog... but I thought I should put together something useful for the mindless number of people who struggle with computers and/or computer networks....

ah... who am I kidding, this is more or less to satisfy my ego....

muhahahaha....
